Misty Copeland is a dancer for the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. In 2007 she became the third African American female soloist that they’ve had throughout history, and the first they’ve had in 2 decades (which says a lot about race issues that still exist in the ballet world). Most professional dancers start dancing around kindergarten which makes Copeland’s story even more inspiring. Misty only begun dancing at the age of 13, but she was en pointe within 3 months and soon after earning accolades other dancers only dreamed of. She is among the rare few who surpassed tradition with sheer talent and determination. So when Under Armour approached her to be the face of their new campaign, it was only logical. She has overcome obstacles in her life, including her body type, which is fuller and more shapely than the average ballerina. But she has that spark that makes you want to watch, to not take your eyes off of her.
Under Armour got it right when they picked this athlete for their campaign.
In this “I Will What I Want” ad, Under Armour strips away the ballerina stereotype of tulle and lace, showing Ms. Copeland in a more realistic way, shiny with the sweat of hard work, beautiful in her strength and determination, clearly an athletic force to be reckoned with. They show a role model who worked hard, beat the odds, and now lives her dream. She is an accomplished award-winning dancer. She is beautiful. She is a role model, and an inspiration to us all- proof that if you have a dream and you work hard enough, anything is possible.
